Senator Walley spotlights Jaden Smith, a Hardin County JAG standout whose national employability skills award embodies West Tennessee grit. Discover how local talent overcomes rural hurdles to build a brighter future.

In the heart of Hardin County, where the Tennessee River meets the resilient spirit of West Tennessee, stories of quiet determination remind us why I fight every day for District 26. Meet Jaden Smith, a high school senior whose national Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) award for employability skills has turned heads far beyond our eight counties—Chester, Fayette, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Lawrence, McNairy, and Wayne. Honoring him at the State Capitol last February was one of those moments that reaffirms my calling as a senator, psychologist, and minister: Our youth are not just the future—they're the spark igniting it now.

Jaden's path isn't one of silver spoons or urban advantages; it's forged in the real-world challenges of rural life. Balancing rigorous academics with a part-time job at a local farm, he volunteered countless hours at community food drives and mentored younger JAG peers. The JAG program, which equips students with career readiness tools, became his launchpad—teaching resume-building, interview skills, and financial literacy amid limited after-school options in small-town Hardin County. His national recognition? A testament to excelling in all six JAG competencies: learning to learn, learning to earn, and more. As JAG celebrates such "6-of-6" achievers, Jaden stands out, proving that with the right support, rural kids can compete on any stage.

From my vantage in Nashville, I've seen too many bright stars dimmed by barriers like spotty broadband or underfunded schools. That's why I've pushed bills like SB 789 for rural internet expansion and opposed one-size-fits-all education reforms that sideline public schools. Jaden's story echoes the grit I've witnessed in my 40 years of service—whether counseling families as a psychologist or advocating for child welfare as Tennessee's former Children's Services Commissioner. He reminds me of Ephesians 6: "Stand firm." And stand he does, eyeing a future in agribusiness to give back to the land that raised him.

To the parents, teachers, and JAG coordinators in District 26: Thank you for nurturing these leaders. Jaden, you're an inspiration—keep shining. What's an "amazing person" story from your corner of Tennessee? Share in the comments; let's celebrate more District 26 stars together.
